Aim

The programme aims to inculcate social welfare in students, and to provide service to society without bias. NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone who is needy gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity. In doing so, volunteers learn from people in villages how to lead a good life despite a scarcity of resources. It also provides help in natural and man-made disasters by providing food, clothing and first aid to the disaster victims.

National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of Moradabad Institute of Technology, Moradabad is functioning since November 2004. Students (Boys and Girls) of various streams are enrolled for need based social activities as far as practicable mostly with in the village community. They are trained to prepare their mind-set for different social works and awareness against abuses among the youth, prevention of female feticide and to promote literacy.

History of NSS in India

In 1958, then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru advised to involved the energy of youth in different social activities and responsibilities. The first Committee was appointed under the chairmanship of Dr. C.D. Deshumkh who prepare a scheme for compulsory national service by students prior to their admission for degree courses. At the second stage Prof.K.G. Saiyidain had undertaken a study of National Service on a Voluntary basis.

After a deep study Dr. B.S. Kothari(1964) recommended that students at all stages of education should be associated with some form of Social Service. National Service Scheme (NSS) was adored in the form of a new programme as an alternative to NCC.

The National Service Scheme was started to establish a meaningful linkage between the Campus and the Community. Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, believed in “Manava Seva ya Madhava Seva” Service to man is service to God.

For the national reconstruction and national resurgence student youth, teachers and intellectuals are considered the three basic components of the National Service Scheme. The cordial principal of the programme is that it is organized by the students themselves and both students and teachers through their combined participation in social service, get a development.

The Nature of NSS

This Social Service Scheme which is meant for students sponsored by Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India for the students.

Objectives behind the NSS

• To enable the students to understand the community in which they work.
• To understand themselves in relation to their community.
• To identify the needs and problems in the community in the solution of which they can be involved.
• To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
• To apply education- find practical solution to individual & community problems.
• To develop competence required for group living and sharing responsibilities.
• Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
• To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
• To develop capacity to meet emergencies and national disasters.
• To practice national integration.

NSS Badge

The NSS symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The NSS volunteers wear it while undertaking any programme of community service. The Konark wheel in the symbol has eight bars which represent the 24 hours of the day. Hence, the badge reminds the wearer to be in readiness for service of the nation round the clock. The Red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS Volunteers are full of blood i.e. lively, active energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation.

The vision is to build the youth with the mind and spirit to serve the society and work for the social uplift of the down-trodden masses of our nation as a movement.

Mission

The National Service Scheme has been functioning with the motto “NOT ME BUT YOU” in view of making the youth inspired in service of the people and hence NSS Aims Education through Community Service and Community Service through Education
